It runs and runs and runs ... For over 60 years the beetle rolls on all roads in the world. His story begins in 1931, when the design office of Ferdinand Porsche had already developed a streamlined sedan. After neither Zündapp nor NSU could decide on a production, Porsche was commissioned to develop a »Volkswagen«. Mercedes was commissioned to build a first sample series of 30 pieces. In view of the positive assessment, the then government decided to build a Volkswagen factory in the KdF city (now Wolfsburg). During the war, however, only military vehicles were built.
After the war, the plant was destroyed to 85 percent. Although an expert commission of the Allied and Henry Ford II had not certified the Beetle an economic future, yet in 1945 the assembly line began to run again - initially still relatively slowly. However, this condition was soon to change, and in the years that followed production numbers continued to rise sharply.
To meet the taste of foreign customers, in addition to the standard model in July 1949, a more elaborate "export model" was introduced. The external appearance was distinguished by a high-gloss finish and rich chrome plating from the standard models. From March 1953, an oval window with no vertical bridge replaced the »pretzel window«.
The production peak was reached on 17 February 1972, with 15,007,034 vehicles produced was the Beetle new "world champion" and thus became the most successful car, before the previous record holder Ford T. In January 1978, the last Volkswagen Beetle German production in Emden / Osnabrück from the band. Afterwards, the beetle production was relocated abroad. In 1985, the import of the Mexican beetle ended in Germany.
